Helping your child with middle-school math (without doing it for them)

Rescuing delivers quick relief, but it leaves the child feeling dependent.

Coaching keeps the pencil in their hand. It focuses on asking questions that help them discover the next step themselves.

When you coach, you aren't just solving a problem; you are building their problem-solving muscle and resilience.

2. Lead with the "Tell Me What You Tried" Question

Before you look at the problem or offer a single hint, ask one simple, non-judgmental question:

"Tell me what you've already tried, or show me where you first felt stuck."

This simple prompt accomplishes three things:

  • It forces them to review their own work instead of immediately giving up.
  • It shifts the dynamic from an interrogation ("Why didn't you do this?") to a joint investigation ("Let's see where the path split").
  • It validates that effort was made, even if the result isn't correct yet.

3. Enforce the "Show Your Work" Rule Early

Teachers don't ask students to "show their work" just to be difficult. Showing steps is the scratchpad of the brain. When kids try to do three steps of an equation in their head, cognitive overload sets in, leading to simple computational errors and frustration.

  • The Visual Hint: "Can we draw a quick picture, model, or table of what's happening here?"
  • The Pattern Hint: "Does this look like a problem you solved in class today or an example in your notes?"

By stepping down the hint ladder gradually, you guide them toward the answer while letting them cross the finish line on their own.
